Talk With Moriyuki Teruya, the New Okinawa LDP Chairman

Okinawa: Recently, Moriyuki Teruya has been elected as the new Okinawa Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman, and interviewed (Okinawa Times, Mekaru) him about the return of MCAS Futenma and the party’s retake of the administration in the future from a non-ruling standpoint.

(Abstract)

—Regarding Futenma?

“Will act according to the supreme court’s decision. We’re cross checking his public pledge of “will not allow to make any base,” but its not being realized. The inland construction on Camp Schwab will restart soon and just have not been able to meet the citizens’ expectations.”

—Looking at the past major elections, the party’s thinking of “Henoko” for removing the danger of Futenma may be difficult as well?

“We would like to realize the return of Futenma, to include Henoko, through every possible means. Best if its relocate outside of Okinawa, but the reality ain’t so. The governor, despite being a conservative, has not (yet) negotiated a concrete plan with the Prime Minister and not demonstrating political power”

—Effort towards Okinawa Promotional Budget and tax system?

“From a non-ruling standpoint, we’ve been appealing for the continuation of the current tax system and the need for securing of the Okinawa budget. We’re diligently backing up the administration, but the response by the prefecture seems weak and unclear to forecast”

—Thoughts on retaking the administration two years from now?

“The current administration started as conservative/progressive (reform) , however, I look at it now as just a progressive party. There is no trust relationship with the central government, just opposing (protesting) of the base, but demanding the promotional budget is simply abnormal.”
